THQ held its annual Superstar Challenge video-game tournament last night in Houston, TX as part of the WWE Axxess fan event for WrestleMania 25. Featuring WWE Legends, Superstars, and Divas fighting it out in Legends of WrestleMania on Sony PlayStation 3, thousands of fans were delighted to see Dusty Rhodes, Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase Sr., Ted DiBiase Jr., Brie Bella, Nikki Bella, The Brian Kendrick, Ezekiel Jackson, and more. While Cody Rhodes and Brian Kendrick showed some pretty impressive gaming skills, nobody could touch Kofi Kingston. One of the stars of WWE’s RAW brand, Kingston waxed the competition and became the 2009 Superstar Challenge champion.
Fans of THQ’s wrestling games recall that Kingston was last year’s runner-up, losing to two-time champion Elijah “The Black Pope” Burke. Sadly, Burke is no longer working for WWE , so Kingston wasn’t able to get revenge. However, Shelton Benjamin — the winner of the first four Superstar Challenge tournaments — hit the ring to challenge the new champion. Kingston took him down easily. To be fair, Benjamin is an awesome Smackdown vs. RAW player and doesn’t have much experience playing Legends of WrestleMania.
After his seemingly humiliating defeat, Benjamin told me that he was taking it easy on Kingston, since they’re competitors in WrestleMania 25’s “Money in the Bank” ladder match. He said that Kingston has no chance in the match and he wanted him to feel good about winning a video-game tournament. Plus, it sets up an interesting angle for next year’s tournament. X-Play was shooting interviews with numerous WWE stars, including “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Sergeant Slaughter, Kingston, Benjamin, and more. Look for those WWE Superstars on X-Play soon!
