Professional wrestler Matt Striker was at Seminole Community College today to urge young adults to register to vote.
No one was placed in a headlock during his appearance.
But the high school social science teacher-turned World Wrestling Entertainment star urged students attending summer session classes to flex their intelligence by registering to vote and taking part in the political process.
“Educate yourselves! Don’t walk around being stupid!” he said.
Today’s event was sponosred by the Seminole County Supervisor of Elections office. Striker was representing the WWE’s Smackdown Your Vote! initiative. The organization sends pro wrestling personalities across the country to participate in non-partisan voter registration drives.
Seminole County Supervisor of Elections Michael Ertel, a WWE fan, said his office is always on the lookout for opportunities to register new voters. WWE provides the star power for free, he said.
The event resulted in 18 signed voter registration cards and an entertaining break for about 30 students in one class Striker visited briefly.
“He’s awesome and adorable,” said student Holly Kaye Peacock, 28, who snapped a few cell-phone photos of the wrestler.
