I thought last night’s Smackdown gave us some very good matches. Now I plan to talk about those matches, but I also want to talk about what is wrong with Smackdown. Even though we get solid wrestling pretty much every week, there is something that Smackdown is missing and this missing link in my books needs to be added to the shows. I’ll fill you in right after I talk about the following matches.
The match of the night had to be Mr. Kennedy….Kennedy vs. Matt Hardy. This was fantastic. Matt and Kennedy gave their all and when I see Mr. Kennedy…. Kennedy work a match like this, I find myself thinking that the more you put him into matches like this one, the more I could see him go after the World Title or for that matter the WWE title and become champion. In my opinion this was a MUST SEE match. Also some of the other good matches of the night were, Brian Kendrick vs. Deuce, but I’m telling you I’m still not feeling this gimmick. And I liked Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Gregory Helms. The other two matches, Miz vs. Finlay, Boogeyman vs. William Regal and MVP vs. Kane were okay too.
So you might ask if I liked every match on the show then what the hell am I complaining about. Here’s my take on what Smackdown needs to go from a good show to a VERY GOOD show. Now many of you might disagree with me but I think what the shows are lacking are storylines. With the exception of the Taker/Batista feud, Kane/Boogeyman and Regal and Taylor and D&D/London and Kendrick nothing on the show makes sense. The sad part is for a few weeks now we have gotten quite a storyline with Theodore Long and Krystal. And don’t get me wrong I like it because I know it’s leading to something or someone that will probably take over and screw Long. What I don’t like is that the mid to upper card guys have nothing going on script wise, yet they go out and wrestle. Two examples of this was would be the Hardy/Kennedy match, sure I loved it, but what was the reason for these two wrestling each other? And Helms vs. Yang. Out of the blue they come out for a match but why? There’s no heat, nothing going on between them. And this is the problem, week after week we get solid matches and believe me that means something but we get too many matches where guys are just thrown in the ring without any angle.
Now I get a lot of Smackdown feedback and the majority of my reader’s feel that compared to Raw, Smackdown is a much better show and that’s because of the wrestling. And I agree Smackdown is the wrestling show, but I am finding out week after week that I need just a little bit more. I won’t lie to you, as much as I love watching the matches I find myself often bored and watching the clock. I guess I want it all; I want a storyline that has a lot of depth to it, and strong wrestling. No I don’t want Vince McMahon to grace Smackdown, but I wish Vince would take as much interest in this show as he does with Raw and now with ECW. I’m telling you have creative write some decent scripts, give it to the guys that only wrestle and I bet Smackdown would not only keep me from being bored, but it would be like having a complete show to watch.
As I said please don’t think that I hate Smackdown because I don’t, I just need a little more during those two hours. And please don’t think that I think Raw is just THE best because it has storylines, hey Raw has its flaws as well as ECW. I guess I just want to see some life added into Smackdown. Okay enough of my ranting; I want to end with the latest about Undertaker. From what I’m reading on the sites he will be getting surgery for his torn triceps and will be out about 8 months. This still bothers me so much; just watching him last night makes me feel terrible that he’s leaving just when he had that one last title reign. Also with Taker being out for so long the rumors are coming in and one is that Batista will win next week on Smackdown in the Steel Cage match only to lose to Mr. Kennedy….Kennedy. It’s looking like Taker’s injury might open the door for a MAJOR push for Kennedy. Finally I have done this so many times in the past year but I just want to let you know that I might not be around for Tuesday’s column. My brother in law has cancer and we have been told that he probably will pass in the next few days. In case you don’t see a column Tuesday you know that’s the reason why. It’s the same thing as my mother, meaning we are taking this day by day.
