I really had no intention of doing another column so soon, BUT I thought I would share my thoughts on last night’s ECW with you. I was so happy with the show last night that I want to share my thoughts with you. It’s always nice to be able to write something positive instead of bitching all the time.
I cannot believe how much ECW improved last night. One of my readers read that this was Paul Heyman’s show last night, not Vince’s. And I kind of believe it. In one week the show went from total garbage to a show that just entertained from beginning to end. Also the crowd last night seemed so much more a part of what was going on. The atmosphere in Albany, NY was 100 percent better than last week. I was amazed how 60 minutes just flew by last night. Because of what I saw you can bet I cannot wait until next week for the next show. ECW LIVES, well kind of. Hopefully what they gave us last night will continue.
The rumors are that the SCI FI network wants vampires, and other science fiction characters to be a part of ECW. Last week the Zombie character was a complete dud, but I had no problem with the fortune teller opening up the show. She just recapped what has been going on. The character was low keyed not annoying or over the top. Now the first match of the night, Tony Mamaluke with Trinity vs. Sabu was damn good. I really believe it set the tone for the rest of the show. There are times when Sabu looks a little off but last night along with Mamaluke they worked a very good match. It was nice to see a full match to get things going. Hey have you noticed that Rob Van Dam has come back to life? While he might not be the master of the mic, but his little backstage promo was fun. I haven’t seen this RVD for a very long time. It’s like Van Dam feels at home again, and because of this he just seems so lose and so relaxed.
I’m still not happy having Big Show in ECW. Again I was laughing when they had Tazz make a comment during his match with Tommy Dreamer that this is too graphic for everyone to watch. Yeah graphic my ass. Big Show is Big Show and that’s it. But putting Dreamer in there to take the beating kind of made this okay to watch. Anytime Dreamer is in the ring I like it. I want to go back to Big Show. I say get him out of there and put him back on Raw or Smackdown, ECW and Big Show just don’t fit. I was laughing so much with Macho Libre. This guy doing Randy Savage in a body so out of shape was absolutely hilarious. And for the first time I can say that even without Sandman coming out to Metallica’s Enter Sandman his appearance worked for me. Watching him cane Macho Libre was done perfectly since the guy was so damn obnoxious.
Okay yesterday I basically complimented John Cena for the job he did on Monday’s Raw. So wouldn’t you know it, he has to get the best of me when he showed up backstage last night. See I can’t take his shtick on the mic. I thought the swollen black eye and his very serious walk in front of the ECW roster was very effective, but as soon as he opened up his mouth and challenged all of ECW to come to Vengeance I was turned off. Again he comes off so annoying so animated that I wanted to see those guys just beat the hell out of him right there. I guess I can take a silent Cena but I definitely have a problem with a Cena that opens his mouth. And the video of Test coming to ECW really had me excited. ONLY KIDDING. Like Big Show this is something that I don’t see working. Test didn’t even fit on Raw so I can’t see him being a top heel in ECW.
The main event with Kurt Angle and RVD vs. Edge with Lita and Randy Orton was just fantastic. Granted three of the four guys are from WWE but who cares. Listen ECW will never be what it was before they went out; WWE is now a part of them. But when you get a match like this it doesn’t matter to me if WWE is involved because I still felt I was watching an ECW show not a Smackdown or Raw. You had some hot talent out there and along with Lita this baby was off the charts. And the fans really came through during this one. What a strong match to end a very good show.
As I said I hope that this trend continues and this wasn’t a one time thing. It’s so nice to have a good wrestling show to watch on Tuesday nights. Okay I’ll give you all a break and I won’t do a Smackdown column over the weekend, but on Sunday I’ll have my picks for Vengeance. I can just feel that they are all going to be right. Hey how many times have I said that before? PLENTY. Wait I’ll give you one prediction right now that I am so sure of. Edge WILL beat RVD for the WWE title.
