Big News: John Cena challenged JBL to an I Quit match at Judgment Day. In
the main event, Rey Mysterio defeated Chavo Guerrero in a street fight.
After the match, Eddie gave Rey-Rey a beat-down.
Turns/Title Changes: None.
Best Match: Chavo Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio
Worst Match: Matt Morgan vs. Rob Eckos
Line of the Night: None.
Show Details: They showed the Smackdown Rebound from RAW, which was the
Eddie/Rey angle from last week. Michael Cole said there was breaking news,
which was the fact that Rey was making his way to the ring. Yes Cole, we can
see that for ourselves. Rey Mysterio called Eddie a great liar, saying he
believed Eddie when he said Rey was family. Mysterio called out Eddie who
eventually made his way out with no entrance music. The crowd booed Eddie on
the way out and chanted “Eddie sucks”. Guerrero told Rey he has nothing to
say. An angry Rey Mysterio was giving Eddie a verbal bashing. Rey eventually
pushed and slapped Guerrero but Eddie wouldn’t bite. Rey wanted to
fight but Eddie said he would never fight Mysterio. As Eddie left, Rey said
Eddie must be scared he’ll lose to Rey again. Guerrero paused, but
walked off to more Eddie sucks chants. Tazz and Cole were
silent the entire time which helped the segment.
Rey was in Teddy Long’s office and wanted a match with Eddie. Chavo
interrupted, so Rey attacked him. They brawled until officials broke them
up. Matt Morgan beat some jobber. He continued the stuttering gimmick. Cole
had some more breaking news; Teddy Long made Mysterio versus Chavo in a
street fight for later tonight.
They showed Christina Aguilera again with her little brothers supporting
Cena. I’m not sure if you want 10 year olds as the ones trying to make
Cena seem cool. They showed a graphic for Cena versus JBL at Judgment Day. A
promo ran during RAW calling it an I Quit match, which is has yet to be
announced.
Orlando Jordan vs. Booker T – Non-title
After an early exchange, Jordan clotheslined Booker to the outside. Jordan,
who was bleeding from the mouth, threw Booker shoulder first into the steel
post. OJ made a cover with his feet on the ropes, but Booker kicked out
anyway. Booker T fired back with chops and nailed a vertical suplex. Booker
hit a missle dropkick off the top, but Jordan just barely kicked out. It was
one of those nonsensical Kurt Angle near falls that was way too close.
Booker missed on his first Scissors Kick attempt but nailed a second one for
the win. After the match, Kurt Angle approached Sharmell backstage, throwing
in a racist joke at Booker’ expense. Angle told Sharmell he wants
Booker at Judgment Day and wants Sharmell at ring side so she can watch
Angle break Booker’s ankle.
MN w/M vs. Scotty & Shannon Moore
Moore and Scotty double teamed MN before MN was able to gain control on the
legal Moore. Nitro and Moore met in midair on a double cross body attempt.
Shannon made the “hot” tag to Scotty who cleaned house. Scotty went for the
Worm but was distracted by Melina. MN hit the Snapshot with the referee
distracted for the win. MNM didn’t get nearly enough offence in this
match and made them look weak against a lesser team, especially considering
who they had to beat to win the titles. After the match, Rey Mysterio
attacked MN with a lead pipe. Much like Carlito, if they actually want MNM
to get over, they’ll need to put them in an angle against a strong
babyface team, instead of having them go over “teams” like Scotty and Moore.
Keeping the association with Rey Mysterio is a good start.
JBL came out and called the crowd quitters. He called Cena the Buster
Douglass of the WWE as the crowd chanted for Cena who eventually came out.
He said JBL was a lot of things, but a quitter wasn’t one of them.
Cena then made some lame jokes. Cena fired up, saying he wasn’t a
quitter either and challenged JBL to an “I Quit” match. JBL was frightened.
There was a jobber in the ring ready for the Angle Invitational but Kurt
said he wasn’t in the mood today. He changed his mind and gave the
jobber a severe beating. Angle challenged Booker T to a match at Judgment
Day and Booker came out to accept. Angle said after Booker loses, it’s
too bad he’ll have to go home to that “gutter slut”, referring to
Sharmell. Booker attacked Angle and held him back so Sharmell could slap him
around. However, back in the ring, Angle gave Booker a low blow followed by
an Angle Slam. Angle stared down Sharmell who started to run away, but fell
down. Angle was about to put her in the Ankle Lock when officials stopped
him. Booker carried away Sharmell as Cole hoped Sharmell wasn’t hurt.
She tripped and fell on the carpeted aisle way, I doubt she’s hurt.
Eddie was sitting in his locker room staring at nothing. Chavo said he would
beat up Rey for the Guerrero family.
Carlito Caribbean Cool vs. Hardcore Holly
Carlito gave Holly a hard chop in the corner. Holly came back with three
chops of his own and his low blow with Carlito hanging over the top rope.
Carlito applied a headlock but Holly countered with a back suplex. Holly hit
a back body drop and a full nelson slam for two. Holly hit a clothesline off
the top for another two count. Hardcore went for the Alabama Slam but
Carlito held on to the ropes and applied a school boy with his feet on the
ropes for the win. Carlito grabbed the mic and said his guest on the Cabana
next week will be the Big Show and he’ll give Show an offer he
can’t refuse. Carlito spit apple into the camera. I guess Holly
didn’t want to be on the receiving end of that one.
Teddy Long introduced Cena’s music video. Like I mentioned last week,
they should do as little as possible to make this seem like a WWE-created
project. The video itself was as cheesy as they wanted it to be. Only the
first verse of the song was done by Cena.
Chavo Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio – Street Fight
I’m not sure how they can put Chavo in the main event considering
he’s basically been non-existent for a long while. Rey did a baseball
slide to Chavo’s crotch in the corner. Mysterio tried a springboard
moonsault but Chavo ducked. Rey came back with a springboard hurricanrana
sending Chavo to the outside. Mysterio jumped out after Chavo but Guerrero
moved. Chavo grabbed a steel chair and brought it in the ring, but Mysterio
dropkicked Chavo in the knee. Mysterio came off the top rope but Chavo
dropkicked him in the stomach. Guerrero slid Mysterio to the outside of the
ring much like MNM did last week. Chavo pulled a ladder out and placed it in
the ring but Mysterio attacked Chavo before he could use it. Chavo was on
the outside of the ring when Rey dropkicked the Ladder into Chavo’s
head. Mysterio set the ladder against the ring and hit a moonsault off one
of the top rungs on the ladder. Mysterio went to the top rope with the
chair but Chavo knocked him off. Guerrero bounced Rey’s head off the
chair twice before nailing the Gory Bomb but Rey kicked out. Chavo pointed
to the stage and MNM made their way out with a ladder. Rey dropkicked the
ladder into MNM but missed a 619 attempt on Chavo. Guerrero slammed Rey into
the mat with Rey coming off the ropes, but Rey kicked out. Mysterio hit the
springboard sitting senton with Chavo sitting on the chair for the win.
After the match, MNM beat down Rey and the crowd chanted for Eddie.
Eddie’s music and he cleaned house. He hugged Rey and the crowd
cheered. Eddie then clotheslined Rey and opened up on him as the crowd
chanted Eddie sucks. Eddie rammed Rey face first into the steel post and he
ripped open part of Rey’s mask to show Rey bleeding. Eddie then gave
Mysterio a vertical suplex onto the steel steps.
Final Thoughts: This was a decent show overall which was brought down by the
fact that only one of Smackdown’s main eventers was in a match, which
is far removed from Monday’s RAW. It was also brought down in segments
where they try to establish new characters. Its fine when you try to
establish new talent because you’ll see the benefits in the long-term,
but the problem is they give up on these guys way too often. All that aside
however, as has been the case in previous weeks, the majority of the show
has focused on building towards Judgment Day.
Match Results:
Matt Morgan beat Rob Eckos
Booker T beat Orlando Jordan – Non-title
MNM beat Scotty 2 Hotty & Shannon Moore – Non-title
Carlito beat Hardcore Holly
Rey Mysterio beat Chavo Guerrero
