Oh have I got a column for you. It’s about Smackdown. This is not one of my most positive columns about the show, yet as bad as the show was I’m not in one of my angry moods over it, maybe because I was well prepared before I watched it. See I read the spoilers. I read the
spoilers every week, and this time, no matter who posted the Smackdown results, not one person raved about it or thought it was half way decent. No, each review I read was nothing but thumbs down. I read about the so-called main event with Orlando Jordan vs. Big Show, and Show getting hosed down with feces thanks to Eddie Guerrero. Naturally after reading that I thought that’s so typical of the WWE staff, bathroom humor rates very highly with them. I read about the Battle Rap between Kurt Angle and John Cena. In print that kind of turned me off, and watching it was no better. I’ll be the first to admit I’m not in the age group that’s into the rap thing, there’s times I’m fine with it, but I thought it was a total waste of time watching Cena and then Angle trying to top Cena. I’m telling you turn Kurt heel and get some life back into him.
I was also ready for the debut of Paul London. I know he’s quite popular in the indy scene. And I’m glad to see WWE has brought him up, but to put him against Brock Lesnar last night in a squash match was rather ridiculous. Then we had the FBI come out, and watching Chuck Palumbo kind of made me wish he and Johnny Stamboli were gone. I’ll be honest with you trust me it’s not personal but there’s nothing at all interesting about watching these two guys. And it’s not say they can’t wrestle, no it’s the way WWE has decided to use them. So Taker vs. Palumbo did nothing for me. The Bashams with Albert taking on Bradshaw and Benoit was good but I’m praying that after No Mercy Benoit gets a new opponent. I also read that there were some decent matches in the show. Like Tajiri vs. Ultimo Dragon. Gee it’s nice of Vince to let the fans know Dragon is still with WWE. By the way this was a very good match. As was Zach Gowen vs. Shannon Moore. Gowen took some hard bumps and these two young guys really came through.
And now for the most important part of the show. The opening segment, the first 15 minutes with Linda, Stephanie, Vince and Sable. Boy did this set the tone for a sub par Smackdown. And you know who really got that mood going? Linda McMahon. I think last night was the worst job she ever did on the mic. That woman seemed totally uninterested in being out there. Before I go on, I like Linda I like her very much I have nothing against I just feel she couldn’t get into this stupid angle with dad and daughter going against each other. I found her promo to be useless, she put no emotion into making us believe that the thought of Stephanie vs. Vince in the I Quit Match was a horrendous thing for a father and daughter to take part in. Linda was just going through the motions and as I watched her I figured if she couldn’t get into her role how the hell could I get into watching Smackdown? It’s funny because Stephanie and even Vince didn’t bother me at all. It was the way Linda presented the angle that really killed everything.
Now months ago I would have written such a nasty column, but as I said I’m cool about all of this. I think it’s a crime that the I Quit Match seems to be much more important than the main event match for No Mercy with Lesnar vs. Taker. I think it’s pitiful to see a father and daughter wrestle each other. If Vince thinks the buyrates for No Mercy will be high because of his match then he really needs to thing again. With No Mercy almost a week away, I really believe or should I say I want to believe that when that pay per view is over Vince will wake up and make Smackdown the great show it used to be. By that I mean he’ll get his top guys back on camera. Oh he’ll still be on but Vince I just know is going to realize that he has gone over board with his match with Stephanie. And he’s going to realize that the fans want the McMahon’s in small doses. I have to feel this way, because after what I saw on Smackdown last night the thought of that trend continuing is just down right SCARY!
