Hello everyone. While involved in an internet chat with Kevin Lowery the other evening, the both of us came to a conclusion: there hasn’t been a good tag team match in a LONG time! Now WAIT! We are not talking about Austin/HHH -v- Jericho/Benoit, we’re not talking about Austin/HHH -v- The Brothers of Destruction, we’re not talking about Tables, Ladders, and Chairs from Smackdown a few weeks back. We’re talking about a regular tag team match that was put out there just because. Think about it. Yes, there have been a lot of five star tag team matches in the past few weeks from Judgment Day until the present; but what about before Judgment Day? Again, I STRESS that I’m not putting the Table Matches, TLC Matches, or any gimmick matches in this list simply because the WWF has recently begun to turn their storylines more “old school” in the ring.
What does that mean? Well basically, they have taken their product and (just look again at the tapes of RAW and Smackdown from last week and the week prior) brought it back to its roots of great in ring psychology and in ring storytelling.
Back to my purpose for a moment. Prior to the past month in tag team wrestling, when was the last GREAT tag team match that didn’t really involve a gimmick? I’ve been thinking about it and I really think that the February 7th, 2000 edition of RAW that had The Radicals, HHH, and X-Pac -v- Rikishi, Too Cool, Mick Foley, and The Rock was the last really great tag match prior to the ones listed above from the past weeks. So this is my question to YOU…when was the last great, non-gimmick tag team match? Please e-mail me and let me know what you think. Thanks!
