When talking about women and professional wrestling in the 1990’s, a few major names come to mind. The first and foremost in MY head is Sensational Sherri. There are other huge names like Sable, Medusa, Debra, and Bull Nakano that come to mind, but my favorite woman will always be Sherri! I don’t want to digress here, but with her recent winning of the AWA Title, I have to think that Sherri is gearing up for a comeback. Hey, I have already spoken to people who think that she has what it takes to regain the Women’s Title in the WWF and bring a new sensationalism to the federation. That would be something, huh? Sensational Sherri Martel making a comeback to the top dogs in the WWF. Folks, if that happened, it would be nothing less than huge.
The WWF has been the trend setter in women’s wrestling. From the Fabulous Moolah to the “sexy, sultry” Sable, they have had the best names in the business. In the current reincarnation of the Women’s Division, the WWF has one of the hottest women with one of the biggest followings in pro-wrestling with Debra and an unbelievable array of talent ranging from the beauty queen types to the monster bodybuilders to the plain old ass kicking wrestlers. Truly, the current Women’s Division in the WWF will stand the test of time…if the WWF plays it right.
Currently, the division is comprised of Ivory, Tori, Jackie, Bass, Hosaka, and an occasional Debra. A division cannot succeed with only six women. Yes, there are others like Ryan, Terri, Stephanie, and Mariana, but they are not wrestlers. Heck, Debra is not even a wrestler. While there have been rumors of Ryan, Debra, and Mariana taking wrestling lessons, I don’t think that they will ever achieve the pure wrestling ability of a Medusa or a Chyna. Leaving that point aside, the WWF has assembled a great talent of women, but there is another superstar who should be named above. The one and only Luna.
Contrary to popular belief, Luna was suspended indefinitely only because she would not go along with a storyline that would have her jobbing to Sable. How can the WWF expect to get a Women’s Division going that will stand the test of time if they are having greats like Luna job to no talent personalities like Sable? It is beyond me. I think that with the re-addition of Luna to the ropes of the WWF, they will have the best group of female wrestlers ever assembled in the 1990’s in the United States. Can they get Luna back? Well, first things first…the fans must speak!
I’m sure that most of you know that there was an online movement to get Luna back into the WWF that was run by the Luna-tics Asylum. The urged everyone to send an e-mail to
Granted, there are rumors around that Luna was already re-hired by the WWF, it is better to be safe than sorry. I would send that e-mail today!
Not that Luna would walk right in and take the title, but a feud between her and Ivory would be huge. Ivory has really come into her own in the WWF. The new heel role that the WWF has her playing is excellent. The backstage officials knew that she could rock the microphone, but they never gave her a chance. Heck, after this past Monday, I would let her talk as much as possible. Being a former GLOW champion, many expect Ivory to give the WWF a kick in the pants as far as athleticism in the Women’s Division goes. As she stated, there are no more Barbie dolls in the Women’s Division, just talented athletes. This is a huge step for the WWF and for women’s wrestling as a whole.
