THE TWO SHEDS REVIEW by Julian Radbourne

So what do you get when you cross a Mexican wrestling legend with a bunch of kids wanting to shoot a porn film? No, this isn’t a joke, and there’s no punch line. Instead, there’s just a film called Wrestlemaniac.

Wrestlemaniac stars Mexican wrestling legend and uncle of current WWE superstar Rey Misterio. Misterio plays the character of El Mascarade, and, as unlikely as it sounds, he was created in the 1960’s from pieces of three other wrestlers to become the ultimate luchadore. But something went wrong, he killed someone, and a team of scientists took him to a town in the middle of nowhere so they can try and cure him.

Forty years later, a group of stoned amateur film makers get lost in the Mexican countryside and stumble across the same town, now completely deserted….apparently. With the van having broken down, they decided to film their new porn film there and then, but after shooting the first scene, they begin to suspect they are not alone, that the legend of El Mascarade isn’t a legend at all. He’s real.

And that’s where the fun starts because one by one these nice people begin to die, with their faces being ripped off in the same way that a defeated luchadore has his masked removed by the victor after the match.

I would go on about what happens next, but I think you can tell, because Wrestlemaniac is your basic teen slasher movie with an added wrestling twist, and to be honest with you, it’s not that good. The plot twists are predictable, the acting isn’t that good either, and the majority of the characters have no redeeming qualities at all. It’s another one of those times where I found myself cheering for the heel instead of the baby faces.

Given the ending of this film, I have a feeling that we haven’t seen the end of El Mascarade. Which is a great shame, because this film really is poor, and I’m starting to think that I should have asked for a screener copy instead of paying to actually buy this DVD.
